Hello, leaders. I am here to announce that things are changing around here on this podcast.

When I started coaching or moved into executive coaching about four years ago, one of the very first things I did was launch this podcast. And I called it The Career Reset, which was also the name of my business. And I started coaching because I really wanted to help people find the career that they loved. That’s where I started. And I did 70 episodes on that.

I covered a lot of things on this podcast. I interviewed leaders about their careers, I gave lots of advice on career visioning and job searching, I shared my own story, I shared how to avoid the mistakes I made, I shared how to do things successfully, and grow your career successfully.

As I became a more experienced coach, I realized that there was a problem–a little bit of a problem with the premise behind what I had started in my business. I said I started this business because I wanted to help people find a career they loved. But really, what I learned as I became a better and better coach is that your career doesn’t make you love it. You have to decide to love the career that you have. It’s like any relationship. It has ups and downs, and you have to work at it and decide that you want it. Otherwise, you’re just going to be hopping from job to job looking for a job that makes you happy, which never actually happens.

Careers aren’t meant to make you happy. You are. You’re meant to make you happy. Being happy in a career is a skill that you learn. And it’s a choice that you make every day. I’ll go even further and say that supporting this need that people have to be happy all the time, like supporting the idea that happiness is a norm, causes a lot of people pain. Because they think that if they’re not happy, they’re doing something wrong. It’s like something is missing. Like if they’re unhappy all the time, that they’re just less than something was wrong with them. And I didn’t want to be part of that. I didn’t want to be part of making people feel like they weren’t doing things right if they weren’t happy, because sometimes life is unhappy. And that’s just the way it is.

So as I got smarter, I made some shifts. I shifted from helping people find a career that they love to helping people to be successful in the career that they already have, like learning to really enjoy the career that they already have. And then in the last year, I’ve shifted again into what I do now, which is working with leaders to become highly valuable.

My goal is to simplify leadership for all levels of leaders, whether you’re an aspiring leader, a new leader, or a seasoned leader, my goal is to help simplify world-class leadership development. And then somewhere along that transition, I decided to stop doing this podcast. I thought it wasn’t relevant anymore. I thought that the episodes I had done weren’t speaking to the group I wanted to speak to anymore. I thought it was a mistake to keep going with this podcast. And I think we all do that.

We think we do things that make sense. And then we get smarter and we realize that if we had to do them over again, we would do them differently. And oftentimes, we’ll make our past learnings a mistake. I thought the podcast was a mistake. In some ways, I was even embarrassed about it. Like, oh, man, how did I even? I don’t even talk about that stuff. And what I’m doing now is the juicy stuff. And so I was making my past learning a mistake. Like somehow, we think if we weren’t perfect in the past, then we need to hide that or judge that versus just accepting that you know that was the journey that I was on, to bring me to where I am today.

Our mistakes, whatever they are, are stepping stones for today’s success. I wouldn’t have gotten to where I am today without this podcast. And that is the truth. I needed to be on this journey. While I was on that journey, I helped tens of thousands of people who are listening to the podcast, and that alone is enough of a reason to celebrate the work that I’ve done to get me to where I am today.

My job as an executive coach that I chose, by the way, was to help people, and if this podcast helped even one person be less stressed out or find a solution that they need for their career or just basically get a better result, then everything I’ve done is worth it. And that’s the lens through which I want to see this transition from The Career Reset podcast, which is what it was into this new format, which is all about leadership.

And the process, I think is great because the process of becoming a valuable leader requires you to let the past be something that you build on, not something that you use against yourself. And I think the fact that I’m doing this in the first week of the year in January 2024, is really apropos. Because a lot of the time we set our January goals, our new year goals, and resolutions, to, let’s say, correct some of the mistakes of the past year, and I want to offer that maybe those weren’t really mistakes.

One of the questions I love asking myself is, how is whatever happened working for me? How did whatever happened to get me to where I am today make me the leader that I am today? And I hope that this transition from where I was in my pocket podcast, where I am going to my podcast is a lesson to everyone, every leader, that wherever you were, or whatever happened in your career, every mistake you ever made, every misstep that you wish you didn’t do is also a big part of why you’re so successful today.

So I’ve decided to reinvigorate, rebrand, and relaunch my old podcast because there’s a lot of value in those old episodes. And now I get to add even more value to this group and future followers by taking everything we’ve talked about to date on this podcast to all levels. So let’s get started.
